3 Ways Dance Can Improve Academic Performance

At Nan’s School of Dance in Raleigh, we have seen children learn and grow through dance. The skills that children learn here can be transferred into the classroom. Important skills like time management, self-discipline, and problem-solving can prove to be valuable in a child’s academic pursuit. In dance class, children can improve their memory and brain function, which can have lasting effects on their academic performance.

Improves Memory and Brain Function

It may be hard to imagine, but physical activity such as dance can improve brain function. When a child is engaged in physical activity (such as dance) their brain is releasing a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This protein stimulates the growth of new neurons in the brain and enhances learning and thinking. Physical activity changes the brain in ways that protect memory and thinking skills. Learning different dances requires listening, following directions, learning steps, and routines. This can greatly improve your child’s memory and brain function.

Time Management and Self-Discipline

When your child attends dance class, they will learn skills like time management and self-discipline. As your child gets older they will need to know how to balance school, dance, and extracurricular activities. The commitment, discipline, and focus that children learn (and practice) in dance classes are important life skills. These are skills that they will also use in school, work, and other aspects of their lives.

Creativity Helps Problem Solving

Dance is an amazing way for children to express their creativity. Dance encourages children to be more creative and use their imagination. Creativity facilitates mental growth in children by providing opportunities for the child to try out new ideas and problem solve. Problem-solving is an important skill that children can apply in other areas like school and work.
