Nan’s School of Dance Company: Building Strong Bonds through Competition and Dance

Dance is a powerful art form that can bring out the best in individuals. Nan’s School of Dance Competitive Company Team recognizes this and aims to provide a nurturing environment for young dancers to grow and reach their full potential. With almost 15 years of experience in the competition world among all three locations, the school offers an opportunity for committed dancers ages 2nd grade and up to further their training, showcase their skills, learn from different teachers and compete in dance.

The Goal of Nan’s School of Dance Competitive Company Team

Nan’s School of Dance Competitive Company Team aims to create a happy and nurturing environment for dancers to learn and excel. The goal is to provide an opportunity for committed dancers to showcase their skills, learn from different teachers and compete in dance. The company also aims to create a team atmosphere where students will learn to believe in others as much as they believe in themselves. While the trophies and accolades are not the main focus, the company believes that building skills and competing in an environment that develops self-confidence and self-worth are what matters most.

Nan’s School of Dance Competitive Company Team Background

Hillary White, the owner, and director of Nan’s School of Dance in Raleigh, has been dancing since she was a child. She competed during her college career at the national level and learned about discipline, drive, and what it takes to put a top-scoring routine on the stage. The owner of Nan’s School of Dance since 2012, she is committed to the Competitive Company Team and is thrilled to share her rich dance history with the students.

The Competitive Company Team is made up of dancers from 2nd-12th grade who are ready to take their passion for dance to the next level. Divided by age group and skill level, the Company environment fosters technique, drive and leading-edge choreography. While the Raleigh studio is relatively new to the competition world, the Greensboro and Yadkinville studios have almost 15 years of experience.

Our Teams: Nan’s Competitive Company Team

The company group is divided into age groups, and each group is named after a gemstone.

  • Garnet group: 2nd-4th graders
  • Sapphire group: 5th-7th graders
  • Emerald group: 8th-12th graders

Why gemstones? Garnet, Sapphire and Emerald hold value not only for what you see on the outside but also for what’s on the inside. Chosen for their durability and rarity, there are multiple factors that go into a gemstone’s worth. The Gemstones (in our cases) are strong because of the bond of their atomic and crystal structure. The Competitive Company Team likes to associate their team bond with strength. Much like the gems formed in the earth, our dance team leaves a lasting impression, is valuable due to its rarity and encapsulates a durable strength from the time and energy dedicated to dance.

Classes and Competition

At Nan’s School of Dance, we believe that dancers should have a well-rounded experience. Therefore, our Company classes are only held two nights per week, leaving the rest of the week open for students to participate in other extracurricular activities such as clubs, sports or youth groups.

  • For our Sapphire & Emerald dancers (5th-12th graders), we require Ballet, Jazz, Technique, Contemporary, and Hip Hop. (Tap and Pointe are optional)
  • Our younger group (Garnet) is required to take Jazz and Contemporary classes in addition to a Ballet/Tap/Jazz Combo class.

We compete in three competitions each spring and bring large group dances as well as solos, duets, trios and small groups. We are excited to announce that for the ’23-’24 dance year, we will also be bringing a Production that ALL members will participate in.

Competitive Company Team Auditions

Nan’s School of Dance Competitive Company Team auditions will be held on Monday, May 1st, and Wednesday, May 3rd, at the studio. Dancers are required to attend both nights of auditions.

  • On May 1st, students will learn a dance and review skills.
  • On May 3rd, dancers will be divided into groups to audition in front of judges. They will perform the dance they learned and showcase their skills.

Making the Competitive Company Team

We can’t wait to welcome new team members each dance year. During our summer intensive classes, Company members will have the opportunity to sharpen their skills and techniques. Classes begin in August, where students will learn choreography for competitions.
