The Importance of Physical Activity for Children and Teens

How Dance is a Good Physical Activity for Kids

At Nan’s School of Dance in Raleigh, we understand the importance of physical activity for children and offer a variety of dance classes that can give children a creative source of regular physical activity. We believe that dance is a fun way for children and young adults to express themselves while building core strength and engaging in high physical activity.

Why is regular physical activity so important?

Doctors and child development experts agree that physical activity is crucial to young children’s health. According to the CDC, children and adolescents ages 6-17 years old should do one hour or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Experts agree that vigorous activity should be at least 3 days a week and that children should participate in activities that promote muscle and bone strength. Children that engage in daily physical activity will see improved physical and mental health, as well as improvement in brain function.

Improves physical health

Children who engage in physical activity like dance will see:

  • Improved bone strength
  • Improved muscle strength
  • Increased red blood cell count
  • Improved lung capacity and oxygen uptake efficiency
  • Increased heart function

Improves brain function

It may be hard to imagine, but physical activity such as dance can improve brain function. When a child is engaged in physical activity such as dance their brain is releasing a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This protein stimulates the growth of new neurons in the brain and enhances learning and thinking. Physical activity changes the brain in ways that protect memory and thinking skills.

Improves mental health

When children engage in physical activity like dance it can improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, depression, and negative mood. When the body is engaged in a highly physical activity like dance, it releases “feel good” chemicals that can have a positive effect on your child’s mood. Experts say that physical activity allows children to have a better outlook on life by building confidence and increasing self-esteem.
